While planet Earth is 4.5 billion years old, human life only dates back to the Middle Paleolithic age, about 200,000 years ago. When geologist Kate Enfield discovers fossilized footprints in rocks over 2 billion years old, she realizes that an earlier civilization existed. Then highly sensitive gravitational wave detectors record signals from that other race, coming from deep within the earth’s mantle, and communications via neutrino radio bring an invitation to visit. This older, technologically sophisticated civilization has obvious gifts to offer, but some on earth’s surface recognize the threat they pose.
